Collagen is a type of protein. Fibrous in nature, it connects and supports other bodily tissues, such as skin, bone, tendons, muscles, and cartilage. It also supports the internal organs and is even present in teeth. There are more than 25 types of collagens that naturally occur in the body.
Collagen is one of the most plentiful proteins present in the bodies of mammals, including humans. In fact, it make s up about 25 percent of the total amount of proteins in the body. Some people refer to collagen as the glue that holds the body together. Without it, the body would, quite literally, fall apart.
What is the mechanism of collagen’s effect on the “skin”?
Collagen makes up 70% of the dermis, which lies beneath the epidermis. Collagen, elastin and other springy fibers are woven across the dermis, which also contains hyaluronic acid. The combination of these firm fibers and newly secreted hyaluronic acid gives “firmness” to the epidermis.
Recent research found that “consuming five grams of collagen peptide daily for more than four weeks improved moisture levels in the skin and made skin more resilient”. This result proved that collagen peptide is able to improve skin moisture and resilience.
Collagen is the most abundant protein found in the connective tissue in the body. Like many other components in skin, collagen is constantly being broken down, produced and recycled. Marine collagen is becoming increasingly popular for skin treatment and many people believe that it is better than land-based sources of collagen.
Marine collagen is taken from fish and is thought to have less environmental contaminants than the collagen taken from cattle or pigs.
Shark’s fin collagen is smaller in molecular weight and thus has increased absorption into the skin. Marine collagen is derived from fish or seaweed but Shark’s fin collagen is taken from shark’s fins solely.
The use of collagen increases as we age and picks up speed after 30. As we age, it can benefit the skin to help boost collagen presence.
Shark’s fin collagen is extracted from shark’s fin that are being processed for other purposes, so the collagen derived from these sources is said to be environmentally friendly.
Bovine collagen is sourced from cows and porcine collagen is sourced from pigs. It is cheaper to extract therefore is very commonly used in many cosmetics. Studies have shown that up to 3% of all people are allergic to bovine collagen. Shark fin collagen is molecularly similar to human collagen so allergies are far less common.
Shark’s fin collagen is extracted from shark’s fin. Shark’s fin collagen is absorbed up to 1.5 times more efficiently into the body which means it has superior bioavailability and penetration over bovine or porcine types. Because it is absorbed more efficiently and enters the bloodstream more quickly it is considered the best source of collagen for your skin. It is purified while retaining its complete nutritional profile.
Collagen is the most important factor to maintaining youthful skin.
Collagen comes in a variety of types,. The majority of collagen products are highly processed and altered before adding to the cosmetic.
In the past, the mainstream is the animal collagen like beef, pork and/or chicken.

Collagen from shark’s fin has been recognized as the purest form of collagen.

The shark’s fin collagen contains a low hydroxyproline contents and denaturation temperature.
The Korean medical society had found that shark fin collagen is excellent in absorption compared superior in its cellular repair capabilities.
